On April 7th & 8th, the Association will once again sponsor the Masonry Design/Build Competition at NJIT’s College of Architecture & Design. This year the theme is “Temples of Freedom”. The main goal of the project is speculation on the future of masonry.
The Kick-Off Event was held on February 28th at NJIT and hosted by Michael Schmerbeck, President of the Association and Back Brook Masonry, a major sponsor of the competition.
Dan Siteman, Director of Industry Development and Technical Services with IMI, presented “Revealing Masonry’s Aesthetics: Creating Patterns, Bond, and 3D Masonry” to the students. This presentation was designed to show the many options available when using masonry in designing structures, its viability and structural requirements.
The students were then introduced to their Masonry Professionals: Charlie Shea, with Back Brook Masonry, Dan Siteman; and Joe Acchione, the Materials Coordinator, also with Back Brook Masonry. The professionals mentor the students during the design period to ensure that the projects can be built safely, are able to be completed in two days, and are able to sustain the environment for a year and meet the criteria of the project objectives.
