2020 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500

Ron Atzert, owner of American Masonry Corporation and one of Masonry Contractors of New Jersey’s Officers was a judge for the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Competition on February 5th during the 2020 World of Concrete/World of Masonry event. NJ Labor Department Issues Stop-Work Order for Wage Violations, Misclassification of Workers

TRENTON – A subcontractor on a construction job in Jersey City, who paid some workers by check but failed to take out deductions or keep payroll records, was issued a stop-work order by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, which now has the authority to stop an employer from working on a job site when significant pay, benefits, or other workers’ rights violations are documented.

ANNUAL ICE MEETING

The 2019 Annual ICE Meetings were held on October 29 – 30 in Washington, DC.  Both days were filled with information on many topics affecting our industry today.  Attendees walked away much more informed than when they first sat down on topics such as new technologies, silica evaluation and respirator programs, safety and ergonomics training, avoiding water infiltration claims through systemic approach and more.

National Apprentice Week

November 11-15 was National Apprentice Week.  On Tuesday, November 12th BCIT held their Construction  Apprenticeship Expo for BCIT students and Burlington County Middle School students.  Representatives from all  Construction Technology fields in Burlington County were on site with displays and job opportunity information, including the BAC ADC of NJ who had a hands on bricklaying demonstration. BAC Local #5 Apprentice Instructor Ren Engelhardt and Field Representatives Leon Jones, Jr., Lynn Canfield & Mario Cerrito, Jr. were on site to answer questions and assist with the demonstrations.

Coalition of Trade Associations Formed

Earlier this year our Executive Director, Carol Ciesielski, formed a Coalition of Trade Associations to address misclassifying employees as independent contractors and the entire underground construction economy in New Jersey.

In addition to Masonry Contractors of New Jersey, the other associations that currently comprise the Coalition are Associated Construction Contractors of NJ (ACCNJ), South Jersey Mechanical Contractors Association (SJMCA), Employing Bricklayers Association (EBA) and the NJ Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors (PHCC).

The Coalition’s contractor members alone have reported a loss of approximately 30% of their revenue each year in the private sector due to unfair and unlawful …

We said NO to IRAPs for the Construction Industry

MASONRY CONTRACTORS OF NEW JERSEY, ICE, IMI and OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS SAID NO TO IRAPs for the CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY!

The U.S. DOL is revising title 29 CFR part 29, Labor Standards for the Registration of Apprenticeship Programs, and proposed a new rule to expand apprenticeships in America to establish guidelines for third parties to certify IRAPs, Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Programs.  IRAPs would allow industry organizations rather than the DOL to oversee these programs and take over much of the standard-setting that is currently done by the DOL and its state agencies.
